Village of Ossining Launches Campaign to Buy 'Let's Roll' Sculpture

The end is near for the many sculptures dotting a 1.5 mile route in the Village of Ossining. By October 26, they were will taken down after an exciting six-month stint.

For a while now though Ossining Mayor Bill Hanauer had expressed hopes of the village purchasing one piece from this temporary bicentennial village-wide installation.

The Village says the consensus has been to try to keep the “Let’s Roll” wheel that prominently sits perched in a triangle of grass at the apex of Main and Church streets.

“Let’s Roll” made by James Haven with stainless steel, plate, shaft and gear “had overwhelming appeal to residents, merchants and visitors, all who wished this installation was permanent,” village officials announced in their latest Web-blast email.

Others might be more torn on the choice however. On Patch, Catherine Borgia commented, "I love too many if them to choose just one!" She listed some of her favorites as the one at First Presbyterian, the sun/moon sculpture at the library, the one in Market Square, the navigation tool one on Main St..."

Bill Cruse seemed open to any of them. "Keeping one of the sculptures for Ossining would be a great way to commemorate the 200th anniversary with something permanent and public," he said.

Rather than remove "Let's Roll" with the others on October 26, the village hopes to give it a permanent home here and are launching a crowd-funding campaign to do just that.

The artist Havens writes, “I intend that my sculptures should contain enough information that the viewer is not confused or mystified by the artist’s intent. I wish to be considered a good journey- man ironworker who demonstrates a high degree of craftsmanship while using only the best materials to create enduring sculptures that speak to the highest aspirations of the human spirit.”
