Croton 911 Monument Trailblazer Nominated for Women's Hall of Fame

When Cortlandt had to choose a woman to nominate for the second annual Women of Distinction Hall of Fame, they chose the woman who worked to build a monument on the shores of the Hudson River in Croton-on-Hudson.

“I am excited to accept Ms. Mainiero as the Town of Cortlandt’s selection for the 2nd Annual Women of Distinction Hall of Fame,” said New York Sen. Greg Ball, in a press release. “Ms. Mainiero has accomplished so much for our community and has selflessly dedicated her time to honor those that lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on 9-11.”

Janet Mainiero lead the effort to acquire steal from the fallen World Trade Center to create a memorial honoring those who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks. She organized volunteers and established a non-profit organization that raised funds used to pay for its construction at Croton Landing Park. The monument was dedicated on Sept. 11, 2012.
