Ossining Teacher Honored for Technology Use

Ossining High School English teacher Adam Schoenbart will receive the Pioneer Award from the Lower Hudson Regional Information Center for his innovative use of technology in the classroom.

Schoenbart, who teaches English 10 as well as senior electives, received the award based on his classroom use of Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education. Both tools promote student-centered learning and allow teachers to receive technology-based feedback on student comprehension.

“This new technology has changed the way I teach, focusing on students’ active engagement and learning with constant collaboration and feedback, and a development of 21st century skills and technologies,” said Schoenbart.

“Students actively communicate online on Google+ Communities and share and collaborate on documents, presentations and all kinds of work online, including writing, modeling, practice and editing,” he said. “It also allows students to conduct research, build background knowledge, use forms and surveys for feedback, assessment and peer-assessment as well as share notes, projects and resources.”

Schoenbart began using Google Apps for Education and Chromebooks after participating in a district training last summer. The district also supported Schoenbart’s continued professional development as a Google Certified Teacher. Now, he is teaching a course through the Ossining Teacher Center to help other teachers learn these skills
