Senior Awards Night at OHS

Fifty-four scholarships were awarded to seniors from Ossining High School.

Last night 80 exceptional Ossining High School seniors received over $150,000 in scholarships. At the annual Senior Awards Night, students, proud family members, faculty, administration, and sponsors filled up the high school’s auditorium.

“This is the beginning of the end for the class of 2011,” said Principal Mandel in his opening remarks. On this night, the students’ academic accomplishments, community involvement, athletic dedication, and hard work would be acknowledged. “You could not have made the community any prouder,” Mandel said with a big smile.

The 54 scholarships were graciously given to the students by active community members, families and friends honoring a loved one, or by other supportive associations, committees, alumni, and businesses. To receive an award, students had to go through an application and interview process.

Before receiving any award, the students had no knowledge of what scholarships they would be given. Prior to the event, student Sean McQuaid said he was a little anxious, but he obviously shouldn’t have been. His GPA, musical talent, and ranking amongst the top 5% of his class got him into the Crane School of Music. “I’ve worked really hard this year," said McQuaid. His hard work paid off when he walked away with five awards. “It’s great. This will pay for my instruments in college,” McQuaid said.

The Assistant Principal, Ms. Longing, was one of the main organizers for the Senior Awards Night. “I’m excited that most of the candidates will be able to pay for books, pay for costs that are more than just tuition, supplies, possibly even room and board. So it’s exciting that they’ll be able to reach their dreams and go to college,” she said.

This night recognized many achievements from the senior class; it also demonstrated community support. “People are calling us wanting to support our students and their goals," Longing said, “and that’s one of the most amazing parts.”

Hayley Zullow, the 2011 Valedictorian, was the last one to be called up to the stage. Her last name may have been the reason she was called at the end, but her award was the perfect finale for a night of student recognition.
