Ossining Teachers, Trustees Agree to New 4-Year Contract

Salaries, step increases and health insurance contributions were all on the table.

Ossining teachers will get a 1.6 percent raise in the coming school year and none for the next three, according to a contract recently ratified by the Board of Education and the Ossining Teachers Association.
Step increases—which automatically boost a teacher's salary for every year of service and every extra credential—will be reduced.
Teacher contributions to health insurance will stay the same for the next three years and then two percentage points in 2016.

The agreement was reached more than a month before the current contract was set to expire.

“I would like to thank the teachers for recognizing the fiscal times we live in and agreeing to a contract that will allow us to  continue to provide a world-class education for our students,” said BOE President Bill Kress in a statement released by the district.

Key provisions of the contract include:

  • No salary increases in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17;
  • A 1.6 percent salary increase in 2013-14;Teachers eligible for step increases in years three and four of the contract would receive only one-half step;
  • Teacher contributions to health insurance premiums would increase from 12 percent to 14 percent in 2016-2017;
  • To better serve our students, Ossining Middle School teachers agreed to work with small groups of students once every four days for the purposes of academic support.
“Given the economic times, both sides came to the table in good faith and worked collaboratively for the good of the district,” said Ossining Teacher Association President Bob Rosenbaum in the same statement. “We recognized the needs of the community and the district’s need to maintain educational programs. What we did will allow for continuity in our educational program and lay the foundation for future collaboration.”
