Ossining Science Parade Today

A parade will be held today to celebrate Ossining High School's nationally recognized science program. The parade begins at OHS and will end with a rally at Market Square. It should be noted that the parade was originally set to begin at Roosevelt School.

Last month, OHS won Intel's Star Innovator Award in its Schools of Distinction competition. The Innovator Award is given to the school with the most successful and innovative math and science program in the country.

Awards and recognition for Ossining High School have been piling up. Two OHS students were just named to the New York State School Music Association All-State Music Ensembles last week. Also last week, OHS' Business Department was recognized by the New York Department of Education and Business Teachers Association for being an outstanding model for other districts to follow. And if that wasn't enough, OHS 2011-2012 Valedictorian, Evan Olin, was named to USA Swimming's 2011-2012 Scholastic All-America Team.

With so much to celebrate, one might argue that a parade is in order.

“This parade is in celebration not only of the students, faculty and administration of Ossining schools and all the hard work they have done to deserve the Intel Star Innovator Award, but it is a celebration of the Ossining village and town that support the work of our children individually and through groups such as Ossining MATTERS and Communities That Care and through inter-municipal cooperation,” said Ossining Village Mayor William Hanauer. “This award from Intel shines like the sun on an Ossining discovered for its intellectual, academic, athletic and artistic accomplishments by the outside world.”

Officials note that parts of New Castle, Yorktown and Briarcliff, that comprise the Ossining Union Free School District, are also a big part of the school's success.

“All should feel Ossining Pride in this distinction: the Board of Education who provides governance and direction, the entire District Leadership Team who offers vision and support, the faculty and entire staff who devote themselves in all six schools to our students, our parents/guardians who provide support and who entrust us with the best children I can imagine, our own students—of course and our entire Ossining community who partners with our schools in every dimension,” said Superintendent Dr. Phyllis Glassman.

Everyone is invited to come and celebrate by watching the parade, which begins at 3 p.m.

“If the New York Yankees won the World Series, there would be a ticker tape parade in Manhattan. If a local Little League team won the state championship, there would be a local parade. So it is only fitting that academics should be celebrated in the same way,” said Ossining Town Supervisor Susanne Donnelly. “We have much to celebrate.
