Elementary Schools Raise Money to Help Those with Cancer

Please join us for the 4th Annual Stay Awake-a-Thon on Saturday, May 5th!

Elementary schools in the Hendrick Hudson School District are doing their part to raise money to help those with cancer! This includes Furnace Woods, Frank G Lindsey, and Buchanan-Verplanck.  100% of the proceeds raised will be  split between Happiness is Camping - a camp for kids with cancer and the new Hudson Valley Hospital Cancer Center.

How did this start? High School junior Conor Briggi spoke with each of the principals about the Stay Awake a Thon, which is a community event designed to celebrate with cancer survivors, remember those who lost their battle, and provide support  and encouragement to those currently battling this disease. Briggi said, "Nobody should face cancer alone. We want to get everyone involved!"  All 3 schools agreed to have an assembly where students Conor Briggi, Jamie Costello, and Dylan Gambardella visited each of the schools, showed a video,  gave a brief description about the event, and spoke about the importance of giving back to the community and helping others.

During homeroom, donations will be collected, and money from each of the homerooms will be combined to form a school total, and all 3 schools will be combined for an elementary school total. Jamie Costello said, "We wanted them to know it's not just for the High School Kids! There's something for everyone and we want everyone to get involved!"  Dylan Gambardella asked the students about their summer camp experience, and explained that the money raised from the event, will allow a child with cancer to go to summer camp for free."  There will be food, games, appearances by sponge bob square pants, elmo, and more!

Unfortunately, each of the elementary schools have lost a student to cancer. This is a great way to honor and remember them. It's also a way for them to be a part of a larger community, and to help support one another.

If you would like to send a donation to the elementary school team, you can send a check made payable to Hen Hud Leos and either send to the school or mail to PO Box 660, Verplanck, NY 10596. Put the school name in the memo line. If you prefer to donate via credit card, click here all contributions are tax deductible. Does your company have matching contributions? Double your donation today!! If you have any other questions, go to www.henhudleos.org or email debcost@optonline.net Thank you!
