Ossining's 'We Can Do It' Lot Sold to Mixed-Use Developer

Things have not slowed down for the Village of Ossining building department this summer. Recently the village planner announced the sale of the so-called “We Can Do It Lot” at 147-155 Main Street to a private group for development.

The lot had been vacant and used as a parking lot since a fire destroyed three buildings there 15 years ago. With one side building painted with murals, the lot is now barricaded from cars. A sign now says it’s permanently closed as of July 1.

The Stagg Group plans to build a mixed use building with retail space, a restaurant and 31 apartments were met with “enthusiasm” from the Village, a release from the Village announced. The application was approved by Planning Board, the Board of Architectural Review and the Historic Preservation Commission.

“The redevelopment of this parcel represents another milestone of success for the Village of Ossining,” said Mayor William Hanauer at a time when the village is also narrowing down proposals for several other lots in the Market Square project, has festooned downtown streets with hanging flower pots and enjoys sculptures all over. “It will complete the historic Main Street shopping crescent and represents yet another forward step in the renaissance of the Village and the rejuvenation of its downtown.”

“The village is pleased to see this exciting project move forward, enlivening the downtown and returning this parcel to the tax roll,” the release stated.
