Renovating Buck Johnson Park

Buck Johnson Park—a little pocket park at the corner of Gordon Avenue and Blue Lantern Lane in Ossining—is getting a facelift.

A crew from the Ossining Town Highway Department started yesterday breaking up the old asphalt half-court and removing the old playground.

Highway Supervisor Mike O'Connor said new equipment is slated to go in in a couple of days.

The park was once named Blue Lantern Park. It was renamed to commemorate a former highway supervisor, Buck Johnson, who served the town several decades ago.

The Johnsons lived in a little white house next to the town's old highway garage (that house later became town police headquarters). O'Connor said Mrs. Johnson used to feed highway crews during snow storms and such, bringing hot food and drink from next door.
