Lowey Elected Ranking Dem On Appropriations Committee

The Hudson Valley congresswoman is the first woman to take the influential role in Congress.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) noted her selection Tuesday as the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee marks the first time a woman has lead either party on the committee. She assumes her new role when the 113th Congress convenes. Lowey noted the financial challenges that the committee faces.

“In the coming weeks, Congress must extend expiring tax reductions for middle-class families and replace sequestration with budget reductions that jeopardize neither critical services nor investments for the future," said Lowey. "Moving forward, the Appropriations Committee will play a central role in creating jobs; assisting those affected by natural disasters; rebuilding crumbling infrastructure; improving schools and health care; bolstering security at home and abroad; and reducing the deficit by eliminating wasteful and duplicative spending."

Lowey was re-elected last month after first being elected to Congress in 1988. The 17th Congressional district includes Cortlandt, Peekskill, Mt. Kisco and all of Rockland County.
