Senator Carlucci speaks to an Army National Guard unit preparing for tour in Afghanistan

The US Army National Guard Company B, 101st Signal Battalion gathered at the New York State Armory in Orangeburg Sunday to hear from Senator David Carlucci, who pledged them his support both on the battlefield and when they return from deployment.

Sen. Carlucci told the unit, which is set to head to Afghanistan in August, about the high rate of unemployment among military veterans after they leave the armed services and that he is working to change that.

Anngela Vasser-Cooper, president and CEO of the Women's Veteran's Association of the Hudson Valley, also addressed the troops. Members of the Rockland County American Legion were also at the event to speak with troops.

Maggie24; For the LAST 22 years (since Operation Desert Shield/Storm) the National Guard and Reserve components have been “operational” not forces in reserve. During a reservist or guardsman 8 year commitment- multiple active duty deployments are the norm. They are well prepared and a full partner of our Armed Forces. As a retired Master Sergeant- jobs opportunities upon return from deployment are near the top of every deploying soldier-airmen-sailor-Marine concern. So it would be appropriate for the Senator to speak to that topic. You are more than welcome to your other opinions.

Jack Duncan, my apologies if I wasn't clear on my respect for the Guard or their abilities, or their historic mission. I'm just tired of being involved in police actions around the world, that do little but prop up a defense industry and kill loyal Americans, drawn to an ideal. We've spent far too much money supporting Big Oil, dollars that could go to alternative fuel research. This craziness will not stop until we stop our dependence on oil. Fat chance on that.

How about we just HONOR their service and say a Prayer for them and their beloved families. Cut the manure & politics; just say THANK YOU.

Although I do not agree with the War in the Middle East, I sincerly hope that all of or young men and women come home to their familys safely and in one peice. "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Ben Franklin There are two wars being waged right now, the War on Terror, and the War on the Bill of Rights.
