Cuomo 'Proud' of Obama's Support for Gay Marriage

The governor was speaking at a press conference in New Rochelle.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is proud of President Barack Obama's voiced support for marriage equality.

Speaking after a press conference Thursday at the , the first-term Democratic governor said he really believed the president's views on the issue changed over time, rather than just finally admitting the truth.

During an interview recorded Wednesday for ABC News, Obama told Robin Roberts that gays and lesbians should have access to the same civil rights as heterosexual couples.

"Many people evolved on this issue," Cuomo said. "If you posed the same question 20 years ago to people in this state—Do you think there should be marriage equality?—my guess is overwhelming the answer would have been no."

For the governor today, "the answer is yes. I've evolved on this issue," he said. "No doubt about it."

In June, New York became the sixth state in the union to allow same-sex marriage when the state Senate passed a bill with bipartisan support. Cuomo was a strong and vocal advocate for the change.

Bruiser, "We added entitlement benefits like the Medicare drug benefit" It seems that EVERYBODY at the time was really happy with this one, weren't they? The democrats especially with their propensity for government handouts. Now they are claiming it was a bad thing and then go out and pass a 2600 page health care bill. What is wrong with that thinking? Anyone out there paying their own heath care? Have you NOT seen an increase in your premiums? Do you think that is is just a coincidence that the rates have gone up? Who do you think will be paying for the 30 million new heath care recipients and the children who will be covered until they are 26? Someone has to pay. There are NO free lunches. The money has to come from somewhere!

Walt, He has NO plan. Now he wants 4 more years to complete a process that has failed. Sounds like one of those 5 year plans they had in the USSR. You know how they worked. When he was elected he said his TOP priority was the economy. Did he make that a top priority, NO. He made heath care the top priority. Then something else. Now he says he will make the economy his TOP priority when he is re-elected. You can't believe a word he says. He was NOT ready for prime time then and certainly after almost 3 1/2 years he certainly hasn't gained anyone's trust that he will keep his priorities straight this time ! The new theme of the democratic party "forward" is scary. What "forward" over the cliff? That is where we are headed now, just look at the signs.

Francis you made a statement about how democrats supported the drug benefit,(wrong) if my memory serves me well Consider this: When the Bush administration rammed through its Medicare overhaul package, the centerpiece of which was the creation of a prescription drug benefit for seniors, only 11 Senate and 16 House Democrats voted for it. Meanwhile, 35 Senate and 189 House Democrats voted against it. So while Bush called it bipartisan passage — and he could never have passed it without those few Democrats — the fact is, the vast majority of Democrats were opposed. They said so at the time. And they are saying it again now as cost estimates escalate.

"they were stepping forward to serve their country." Maybe the Roosevelts but not Cuomo. You have to be kidding. If you believe that he is doing it for his country I need some of what you are taking. Politics is all about money, power,me and history .. me being the politician. The last one I am sure of did it for his country was the first one.
