State Trooper Killed in Upstate Crash

Investigation of crash suggests six-year veteran of State Police may have been attempting to stop a traffic violator.

A 31-year-old New York state trooper has been killed in an upstate crash.

State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico said Trooper Amanda S. Anna from Liverpool, NY, apparently lost control of her marked State Police vehicle in Town of Hastings in Oswego County late Friday. The investigation of the crash indicates that Anna may have been changing direction quickly in an attempt to stop a traffic violator.

State Police ask that anyone traveling on County Route 37 in the Town of Hastings in close proximity to the time of the accident, 11:26 p.m., or anyone with information about the crash contact investigators in Oneida at 315-366-6000.

Anna was driving a marked State Police 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe eastbound on County Route 37 when she lost control of the patrol vehicle on a curve, striking a guide rail and becoming airborne over a small inlet of water causing the car to overturn several times. Anna was taken by ambulance to Upstate University Medical Center in Syracuse for severe head trauma.

A review of the Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) tracking system shows that Anna was heading westbound and then changed direction to go eastbound.

Anna, a trooper for six years, died at 5:25 a.m. Saturday. She was assigned to the Hastings Barracks in Oswego County. She is survived by her mother, stepfather, a 4-year-old son and a fiancé.

Maybe they use them because they look nothing like what you think a police car would look like when you see it in your rear view mirror.

I think it's more like what happens when you go with the lowest bidder.
