Police: Husband Killed for Insurance Money

Beatrice Camper and John Murray charged with second-degree murder of a local cabbie.

Terrance Camper, the 53-year-old Peekskill cab driver shot dead on Pine Street Wednesday, was killed by his wife and her lover, police said in a Friday morning press conference.

Camper's wife,  60-year-old Beatrice Camper, was arrested Friday morning and charged with second-degree murder, a felony. John Murray, a 60-year-old Newburgh resident, has also been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Terrance Camper's death.

Police believe Beatrice Camper and John Murray were having an affair, and killed Terrance Camper to collect insurance monies.

Beatrice Camper had taken out two insurance policies in her husband's name, with her as the beneficiary, in the month before the alleged murder, police said.

Police believe Beatrice Camper and Murray planned the murder together.

Beatrice Camper and Murray began their affair while Murray was in prison, authorities added. Murray was serving time for murder, and was released 11 months ago on parole.

The two defendants will be arraigned in Peekskill City Court later today.

Terrance Camper was shot twice in the back on the head with a small caliber handgun, police said. He was discovered by a local postal worker.

Authorities said Friday morning that Murray liked called Terrance Camper's taxi to the scene of the crime.
