Update, 12:45 p.m. County police have identified the Briarcliff man struck and killed in Ossining last night, who might have been there posting signs for his campaign for Town of Ossining Justice.

John Mangialardi, 55, of Locust Road, Briarcliff Manor, was hit at the busy intersection of Route 134 and Route 9A around 10:15 p.m. He was a candidate for Town Justice and is believed to have been there posting signs, police said.

The Ossining Town Republican Committee website has dedicated a section to Mangialardi's memory, citing his service as a member of the NY State Guard.

Mangialardi's daughter, Katie, started a Facebook group in support of her father's candidacy in 2011, which has 487 members to date.

She wrote on the group's page on Nov. 5, 2011: "As some of you know, my dad, John Mangialardi, is running for Ossining/Briarcliff Town Justice. He is a really great guy, and he's been working really hard campaigning."

Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino released a statement this afternoon regarding Mangialardi's death: "I was deeply saddened this morning to learn of the passing of John Mangialardi. John was a talented attorney, an aspiring public servant, a devoted husband, father, and my personal friend. He also served his community and his country with distinction as a lieutenant colonel in the National Guard.

“The news of John's death is especially difficult given the alleged involvement of a drunk driver. My heart and prayers go out to the Mangialardi family as they begin to deal with this senseless tragedy. I offer them my sincerest condolences and pledge my continuing efforts to combat the epidemic of drunk driving that has claimed too many of our better souls, like John.

“John will be greatly missed and always remembered.”
