Police Find 3-Year-Old Alone in Pajamas on a Nanuet Street

The boy was returned to his nearby home; no injuries were reported.

A 3-year-old boy set out on his own this morning, ending up on the street near his house while his mother and grandmother assumed the other had him in charge.

Clarkstown Police received a phone call at about 9:30 a.m. Friday reporting a boy dressed in pajamas standing alone on Lawrence Street in Nanuet, near the Pasack tunnel.

Before the police arrived, the 911-caller recognized the boy and took him home. The youngster's house was about 100 feet away.

Police learned the boy's mother was in the shower when the child walked outside. After leaving the shower and learning the boy was no longer home, the mother assumed he had travelled next door to his grandmother's house, police said.

The mother then left for work, according to authorities.

The grandmother told police she had not seen the boy today. She generally cares for the child when his mother is at work, and is licensed to operate a daycare from her home, police said.

"The boy was uninjured and in good health," said Clarkstown Police Sergeant Joanne Fratianni.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident, and have contacted Child Protective Services, Fratianni said.
