Police Files: Mary Kennedy Asked for Help

Case files from the investigation into Mary Kennedy's death were released on Wednesday and indicate that she phoned her husband, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to ask for help the day before she committed suicide.

"She told me that she was sorry for everything," Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told investigators the day after her death, according to published reports on the police investigation. "She said I was right about everything and everything was her fault."

The interviews reveal a May 16 telephone exchange between Shannon White, Mary Kennedy's Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor, and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. during which they expressed mutual concern over Mary Kennedy's well-being and whereabouts. They met at the Kennedy estate and searched; White was first to find Mary Kennedy, dead, hanged in a converted barn behind the home.

White told the police that she spoke to Mary Kennedy on May 13, Mother's Day, when she consoled her over the possibility of losing permanent custody of her children.

The Kennedys were married in 1994 but were going through a divorce and custody battle over their four children. Divorce papers were filed shortly after Mary Kennedy .

Police records also provide an account of the days leading up to Mary Kennedy's death and the day of her suicide given by the caretaker of the family home .

Mary Kennedy had taken to spending her days in bed and had asked the caretaker to pray for her, according to the housekeeper.

"I noticed some changes in Mary," she reportedly told police. "I thought something was wrong with her. I told Bobby about her, and I told him that she needs help. Bobby told me that she doesn't want to help herself."

Mary Kennedy's death according to the Westchester County Medical Examiner. An autopsy later showed her system had no alcohol in it but had traces of three anti-depressants at the time of her death.

Following her burial at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery near the Kennedy clan’s Hyannis Port compound, Mary Kennedy's body was to a larger section of the burial ground with room for relatives to be laid to rest alongside her.
