Ossining Woman Loses $13,000 in Scam

Ossining Police are reporting that a Village resident was bilked out of more than ten-thousand dollars.

say that an Ossining woman was taken for more than $13,000. The Wolden Road resident says she got a call from a man who said he was her husband's cousin last Tuesday. The caller said he was detained abroad and put a person on the phone who was supposedly his lawyer. The person posing as a lawyer said that the Ossining woman should wire money to a bank account. Over the period of three days, police say that the Wolden Road resident wired more than $13,000 in cash to the account.

The man who she thought was her husband's cousin then said that he was flying into Newark Airport on Saturday and would call her. The woman never got a call. She then called her husband's cousin's cell phone. He said he was on vacation in Hawaii and never asked her to wire money.

The Village of Ossining Police Department's investigation of this case is ongoing.

Okay, nothing for nothing.... but are you SERIOUS????? In this day and age, you would honestly wire money to someone? And then to do it with out speaking to both your husband and cousin.. HELLO!!!!! Need I say more... WOW! Simply shocked.

I recently got an email about an: "original painting" of a 19th century scene of the Village of Sing Sing by W. H. Bartlett. The person claimed she got it from her grandmother and the asking price was $15,000. Actually it is a not a painting but a steel plate engraving and hundreds of engraved prints were made back in the day. I have a couple of Bartlett engravings. You can buy one on Ebay for about $40. (forty).

A lot of older people especially are very trusting and if the person used the right names, I could absolutely see a naive person falling for this. Remember, people who grew up in the 30s and 40s are very believing.
