Ossining Fire Department Holds Annual Inspection

The Ossining Fire Department held their annual inspection last night with firefighters and fire engines lining Main Street.

The Ossining Fire Department came out last night and filled Main Street with sparkling clean fire trucks, equipment and neatly dressed firefighters during the annual fire inspection. The inspection, which takes place yearly between June and September, was judged for the first time this year by the Westchester County Parade Judge’s Association. In past the event was judged by outgoing fire captains.

The event started at 6:00 p.m. with all the men, women and engines lining up along Main Street. The inspection featured all nine of Ossining’s Fire Companies and Apparatus. After the line up, the assembled firefighters stood at attention as the procession of a color guard, chiefs and officials passed by. One of those officials in attendance was Ossining Mayor Bill Hanauer. “Every time this event comes I swell up with admiration and pride,” said Mayor Bill Hanauer. “This is the largest and best company in the world.”

While the firefighters looked great in their formal dress uniforms, it was the fire engines on display that was the star of the show. “The trucks are sparkling. This one is my baby,” said Hanauer indicating the TL (tower ladder) 42 behind him. “I had to fight for it. It could deal with our worse high rise fires.”

In addition to the officials, proud Ossining resident’s lined the street. “I love the Fire Department,” said Alicia Santucci. “They always do a great job. We try to make all the parades and events for the Fire Department.”

Bill Kruse was a proud father watching the inspection. “I have three kids in the Fire Department,” said Kruse. “Two boys and one girl, all in Ladder 42… All the trucks get inspected to make sure all the equipment is in top shape.”

Following the inspection, the firefighters had a dinner at Trump National Golf Course. There the results of the inspection were revealed as was the winner of the Clinton Crawford Trophy for the company with the best maintained apparatus. This year’s award went to Holla Hose Co. 5 (Engine 100).

“I think it [the inspection] went very well,” said Fire Chief Thomas Reddy.  “Every member is very proud of their company and they really made every effort to clean the apparatus.”
