Croton Police: Roadwork Risks, Holding Cell Mischief

Holding Cell Mischief

A 21-year-old Croton man held in a cell awaiting his court appearance allegedly busied himself by doing some criminal mischief while he was there, reported Croton Sgt. John Nikitopoulos.

The man, arrested previously on drug sale charges, was in handcuffs in a holding cell when he scratched "some sayings" onto the sheet rock with his handcuffs, Nikitopoulos said. More charges would be entered into his file when he returns to court next week.

Two Sets of Wires Down

Two sets of wires down near the Croton pump house caused numerous complaints of power outages nearby on June 13 at 7 p.m. Police informed Con Edison and the water department about downed wires on Quaker Bridge Road.

Festival Traffic

"It's not bad planning but the fact there's just one entrance onto Croton Point Avenue," Sgt. Nikitopoulos said of the traffic impasse many may have experienced trying to get into last weekend's Clearwater Festival. "It was probably one of their biggest events yet and it's a nightmare because of trying to get such a high volume of cars into the park."

Nikitopoulos said the only issue, beyond a few minor ambulance calls, was the "big traffic jam."

One woman called police on Saturday, June 15 at 11:48 a.m. from her car to complain that she was in line waiting to exit and cars kept cutting her off. She was in the right lane of Route 9 north, waiting in line to exit for quite some time.

Festival organizers reported a turn out of 10,000 on their first day.

Repaving Danger

A driver reported hazardous conditions to police on Route 9 North where state DOT crews are repaving and narrowing traffic to one lane. He called police on June 9 at 2:34 p.m. about the section where the workers are repaving between State Road and Croton Point Avenue. He thought drivers should be warned sooner that work was going on.

"They are prepping for paving from Peekskill all the way down into Croton," reported Sgt. Nikitopoulos, but he thought there was enough time when you're coming over the hill to see the work ahead.
