Croton Police: Birthday Detox for Man Caught Entering Cars

A summary of recent police activity and arrests in the village of Croton-on-Hudson.

Criminal Mischief

A civilian reported to Croton police on August 26 that their basketball hoop had been damaged on their street. The Lexington Drive resident said the steel stand was pulled down off the plastic base.

A car owner found that their car, parked on Grand Street overnight, had the driver's side window broken with a golf ball left in the car on August 31. Police were unable to locate any suspicious activities or persons.

A park ranger reported to police on the morning of September 1 that he had discovered that a car had been driving in circles, leaving doughnut tracks in the sand by the bathhouse at Truesdale Drive. There was no other damage reported.

On September 2, police responded to another report of criminal mischief at the village parking lot where patrols found the gate to the cell phone tower had been entered. Someone cut the lock but police found no other damage. "The tower is still working as crappy as it usually does," Nikitopoulos said. "The service up here is terrible."

Pill Nabber?

ShopRite security called Croton police on August 28 for a person shoplifter who they had in their custody. Upon police arrival, the situation was already remedied, as the woman, from Ossining, said she had forgotten to pay for vitamins she had under her pocket book. She paid the store but was told by management that she was no longer welcome to shop there.

Fraudulent Activity

A Barrington Road resident reported to Croton police on August 29 that he had received a suspicious call the day before from someone claiming to represent his Internet Service Windows Provider. The caller kept asking the resident for further information and the man hung up. He was able to provide police with a phone number which they are further investigating.

A Scenic Drive resident lost a good amount of money from their bank account from an unknown person. The person told police on August 30 that they had discovered $7,500 had been transferred from their account into two different accounts after someone who had gone in and changed information on the account. The email address to access the account had been changed. Police are investigating.

Hazardous Condition

A truck that had a blown tire was apparently leaving a trail of debris from Briarcliff all the way up to Croton, police said.

A caller reported to police on August 30 that a AAA carting truck had blown a tire and was dropping debris on Route 9 North, causing a hazardous condition at 11:28 a.m.

Police found tire parts between Croton River Bridge and Municipal Place but no truck.

Birthday Detox

A caller reported to police on August 31 at 9:07 p.m. that a suspicious man was entering and looking into cars parked in the lot at Veteran's Plaza. The man was described as wearing shorts and carrying a backpack. Police found him and, said Sgt. Nikitopoulos, found him to be "highly intoxicated."

Police checked his backpack and found nothing stolen in it, neither have they received any complaints yet from anyone who was missing anything since. The 30-year-old man, of Croton, whose birthday was actually that day, was transported to Phelps Memorial Hospital for detox treatment.
"He was so highly intoxicated, he could have been doing anything," Nikitopoulos said.

Larcenies

A Young Avenue resident reported on September 8 that a black power climber bike had been taken from behind her property sometime overnight.

ShopRite security told police they had a shoplifter in their custody on September 8. However the woman, of Horseshoe Circle, Ossining, was now complaining of chest pains and needed medical help. The 71-year-old woman refused medical assistance when help arrived and police charged her with petty larceny.

Note: An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
