Croton Cops: Ring Stolen after Manicure, Homeless Man Jumps Bail

A summary of recent police activity and arrests in the village of Croton-on-Hudson.

Email Scam

A local doctor's email address was apparently co-opted by a scammer.

A resident reported to police on Dec. 10 that they had received an email from Dr. Mir on Maple Street, saying he was in the Ukraine and needed $2,250 wired to him via Western Union.

The recipient contacted both the doctor and the police.

Homeless Man Jumps Bail

Croton police arrested a homeless man on Dec. 11, again.

They had previously charged the 30-year-old with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh and resisting arrest.

Det. Paul Camillieri said the man never showed up for court. When 30 days pass after one's court date, then it's considered bail jumping. For this the man was charged with third degree bail jumping and taken to Westchester County Jail in Valhalla pending another court date.

Friendly Service

Police got a call about an altercation going on at Dom's Friendly Service on South Riverside Avenue on Dec. 12 at 2:45 p.m. They arrived to find a man and woman screaming at each other.

They were "stopped, calmed, and sent on their way," Camillieri said.

Pan-handling Door to Door

A resident on Hastings Avenue alerted police that there was a man, possibly in his 50s, going door to door asking for money on the afternoon of Dec. 12. Police could not find any such man.

That evening, an Oneida Street resident described to police a 55-year-old heavyset man knocking on doors saying he needed cash.

Police located a 47-year-old man from New York City in the area who said he fell asleep on the bus and was trying to get back home. Police redirected him back to the bus.

Ring Stolen

A 30-year-old Croton woman reported to police on Dec. 13 that she had been getting a manicure at the Chelsea Spa on Maple Street and took off a valuable ring.

She said she left the ring on the counter at the salon but when she went later to retrieve it, it was gone, she told police.

The ring is valued at $2,500 and police are investigating as a possible grand larceny.

Unmarked Postal Worker

A Cleveland Drive resident found a delivery man to be suspect, as the guy arrived with packages in a dark minivan with no markings. He left packages at the home and walked away on the afternoon of Dec. 13.

Police found him to be a legit U.S. Postal worker with proper identification. He was driving a rental van, "a common practice this time of year," Camillieri said. "But they still should have proper markings."

Note: an arrest does not indicate a conviction.
