Croton Cops: Cyclist Hit By Car; Laundry Owner Wants His Carts Back

A summary of recent police activity and arrests in the village of Croton-on-Hudson.

Escorting Them Out

Croton Police were called in two separate incidents to escort a few folks out of businesses.

On Dec. 2 at 7 p.m., police got a call from ShopRite about a woman being loud and disruptive at the cashier's station. The 50-year-old Croton resident was escorted by patrolmen out of store, Det. Paul Camillieri said, unsure what her trouble was.

The next day, police were called to escort a homeless man, 76, out of Dunkin' Donuts after he had allegedly been loitering in the shop all day. He left the area without incident, police said.

Blue, Silver, Smoker

A resident called police on Dec. 3 after saying they witnessed people in a blue car with no license plates smoking what looked like marijuana in the back parking lot on 364 South Riverside.

However, the call came in the morning for activity they viewed the night before, Camillieri said. When police arrived that morning, they found no one, but they did see a silver car with no plates.

Warrant Arrests

Croton Police made several warrant arrests.

State Police arrested a 28-year-old Peekskill man who had been wanted in Croton for a DWI charge and various traffic violations. State Police brought him into Croton police for booking, and then Croton police turned him back over to State Police.

A 34-year-old Ossining man was arrested on two bench warrants for failure to appear in court on violations of an unlicensed dog and having a dog in prohibited area in the parks. The man paid a $50 fine, Camillieri said.

A bail bondsman brought a 30-year-old Croton man into headquarters for a warrant out for his arrest in the village. He was previously charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh and resisting arrest. He had failed to appear in court, Camillieri said.

The man was taken from Peekskill jail to Croton's judge and then sent along to Westchester County Jail.

False Statement

A 23-year-old Croton man was charged with making false written statement on court documents, arrested and released on Dec. 4.

Auto vs. Bike Accident

A 69-year-old cyclist was hit by a car and injured on Dec. 4 at 2:25 p.m.

The Croton man was riding on Route 29 near the entrance to the Croton Dam when he was hit by a car driven by a 56-year-old from New Jersey.

The cyclist sustained injuries to his hand or wrist, Camillieri said, and was brought to Westchester Medical Center.

Police did not charge the driver.

Treasury Calling?

A Wood Road resident received a suspicious phone call on Dec. 5 from someone claiming to represent the Treasury Department. The caller said the woman's husband was the recipient of an $8,400 grant, all she had to do was offer up his bank account number.

The woman hung up and called police.

Missing Laundry Carts

The owner of the Grand Street Laundromat wants his carts back.

He reported to police that someone made off with two large rolling metal laundry carts -- "not very practical for the sidewalks or streets," Det. Camillieri added -- that he would like to recover.

Police filed a larceny case.

Unauthorized Tree Cutting

Two callers reported to Croton police that a man was cutting limbs from a village tree, causing a hazardous condition on Ratner and Thompson avenues on Dec. 8.

The man was told to stop and clean up and police referred the case to the code enforcement agency.

Door to Door

Some people going door to door in Croton without a solicitation permit were charged with violating village code.

The pair represented Power Home Improvements and were reported by several residents, on Hasting and Melrose.

"You can't go door-to-door without a permit," Camillieri said.

Note: An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
