Croton Cops: Campaign Sign Troubles, Phone Scam Attempts

A summary of recent police activity and arrests in the village of Croton-on-Hudson.

Elderly Man Target of Phone Scam

An 87-year-old Croton man was again the target of a phone scam, police report.
The Sing Sing Road resident got a call advising him to go to CVS and get a money card and then call back with the pin number to secure the money he would get in return. The man realized it was a scam and contacted police.

A year prior, Det. Paul Camillieri said the same man had gotten a call from someone claiming to be from Publisher's Clearing House. The caller said a UPS driver was "right around the corner" waiting to deliver the $2,000 the man had won, albeit as soon as he went to Western Union to send money to them, Camillieri said.

Camillieri said that at the time he had waited a few hours at the man's house to see if any delivery truck indeed showed up, which it didn't.

Felony Warrant Arrest

Croton police arrested an Peekskill man a week ago for false impersonation and aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, later discovering the man was wanted for a felony DWI out of Elmsford.

Luis Jadan Cinchi, 42, was wanted since Nov. 15, 1995 for a driving while intoxicated charge in Elmsford.

Elmsford police came to pick him up at Croton headquarters, police said.

Homeland?

A Croton resident got a call on Oct. 30 from a man with an accent saying he was "Steve Watson from Homeland Security" and asking for money.

The caller told the woman who answered that she and her husband had a charge they owed payment on.

The woman hung up right away, knowing it was a hoax, and called police.

Campaign Signs Missing

The office of the Village of Croton called police on Halloween to report that political signs had gone missing or been stolen, namely those of Virginia Calcutti.

Police noted it for the record.

This follows various reports recently of signs disappearing in Croton

Possible Drug Activity

A resident reported to police seeing two men sitting in a red Honda Pilot on Giglio Court for about a half hour.

The caller told police on Nov. 1 at 3:30 p.m. that the men had been there for a while, looking at their lap. One of the men even got out to urinate in the street, police said.

Det. Camillieri said by the time police arrived all they found was two small empty ziplock bags in the road and advised citizens if they see something suspicious, to make that call to police right away.

Two Arrested in Traffic Stop

A young man and woman from Yonkers were charged after police stopped them in Croton.

On Nov. 1 at 10:20 p.m., the man, 20, was charged with driving with a revoked and suspended license.

The woman he was with, age 17, was charged with disorderly conduct for apparently "trying to obstruct the officers from conducting their duties," Camillieri said.

Party Poopers

Police broke up a party on Oriole Lane after receiving a few noise complaints on Nov. 1 and early morning on Nov. 2.

At 11:45 p.m., police asked the residents to turn down the music.

Again at 1:26 a.m. they issued a summons to a 27-year-old resident for the noise and shut the party down.

Bike Stolen

Police received a complaint of a girl's bike valued at $70 stolen from her residence at Sunset Drive.

The bike was described as a BMX-style Magna bike.

Leafblower Theft

Someone made off with a large and pricey leafblower which apparently had been left at the Bethel Cemetery to blow leaves off the graves.

The blower was reported missing on Nov. 4 at 8:40 a.m., stolen at some point over the weekend. It was valued at around $1,000.

Note: An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
