Cops: Masked Man Injures Three Officers in Bungled Bank Burglary

"A violent struggle ensued" in which both defendant and three officers were injured.

Three Tarrytown police officers were injured when they tried to arrest a man allegedly attempting to rob North Broadway's Chase Bank and a "violent struggle ensued."

This is how Lt. William Herguth described the incident in the early morning hours of Jan. 18 when at 2:24 a.m. local police got a call from Chase security.

Security had detected that someone had triggered the building's alarms. Tarrytown Police arrived to find the rear door had been opened (how, they do not yet know). They searched the building and found a lone man, wearing a ski mask, crouching in a cubicle in the first floor teller area.

The man, who has been identified as Angel M. Delacruz (previous record, if any, unknown pending his fingerprinting), 37, of Pocantico Street, Sleepy Hollow, then put up a good fight, Herguth said. Both sides were injured, with three officers sustaining cuts and bruises for which they were all treated and released from Phelps Memorial Hospital.

Delacruz, whom officers were "able to subdue," Herguth said, was also taken to Phelps for treatment. Here at the hospital he was also arraigned. He was then taken to Westchester County Jail pending a Jan. 22 court date for felony charges of:

  • Burglary in the second, a C/Felony
  • and three counts of second-degree assault, a D/Felony.
Herguth said Sleepy Hollow police, Westchester County police, and Yonkers police-canine unit also responded to the scene, which as one passerby said, was busy.

A citizen told Patch, "when I drove by I saw a lot of cops and yellow tape around the bank."

Delacruz did not have any money on him from the bank, Herguth said. Nor did he have any weapons. He did have some tools in his backpack.

Note: an arrest does not indicate a conviction.
