Attempted Burglary On Old Post Road

A Croton resident called police Thursday afternoon to report someone trying to break into her home.

Croton police are seeking information about a group of men in a black car who are suspected of trying to break into a home on Old Post Road on Jan. 7.

A homeowner who saw a strange car in her driveway and heard breaking glass out back reported a possible burglary in progress at 1:23 p.m.

However, by the time officers arrived, the men were gone. The homeowner told police the car had headed north out of her driveway.

The homeowner told police the incident started when someone began insistently ringing her doorbell. She found a man at the front door who asked her if she had called to request a tow company.

Beyond him she could see a black car in her driveway with a second man sitting in it, talking on a phone.

Because she found the man's behavior odd, she called police to report a suspicious car in her driveway and a suspicious person at her door. While she was on the phone, she began hearing banging noises out back and then the sound of breaking glass.

The police dispatcher kept her on the phone as officers were responding. They found the basement door damaged and a basement window broken at the house. They did not find a vehicle matching the homeowner's description.

Police are seeking at least three people, including a man described as heavyset, six-foot-one, black, in a dark hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. Anyone with information is urged to call Croton Det. Sgt. John Nikitopoulos at 914-271-5177.
