Ossining High School Invites Veterans to Share Their Experiences

For the third consecutive year, Ossining High School is inviting area veterans to share their experiences and perspectives with students in honor of Veterans Day. Students are asked to invite family members or friends who have served in any of our nation’s conflicts to come to Ossining High School on Nov. 6 for the last two hours of the day.

As in past years, the veterans will be seated at tables in the high school library and groups of students will visit the library for one class period, stopping to speak to any of the veterans present. Veterans will have memorabilia on hand from their time of service.

“It is a great way to bring history to life for our students and to recognize our veterans for their sacrifices,” said Ron Whitehead, an Ossining High School art teacher and veteran of the first Iraq War.

“Invite a Veteran to School” is one of many events that Whitehead has helped organize to bring students and veterans together. In the past, veterans have been invited to attend a wrestling match and have dinner; present their artwork in a show; and work with advanced photography students to capture their stories in photo portraits. The Claremont School’s Jazz Band also has entertained veterans at the Veterans Home in Montrose with an annual performance.
