Ann M. Dorner Middle School to Host Engineering Day

Anne M. Dorner Middle School students will get a chance to learn about careers in engineering and try their hand at engineering tasks on Friday, February 14th,  when engineers from IBM visit the school for a daylong program.

During their science period, students in grades six, seven and eight will hear from one of IBM’s 36 visiting engineers and do a hands-on project such as completing a paper tower or bridge or creating a puff mobile. What’s more, students who have shown interest in engineering or an aptitude for engineering will participate in a mentoring session with engineers where they will be able to ask questions about engineering studies and careers.

In addition, from 12:05 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., a group of students will participate in a computer programming workshop using the Alice programming software. Alice is an innovative, 3-D programming environment that makes it easy to create animations for story telling or video games.

“The students talk about this event for days after the engineers have visited,” said Assistant Principal Erica Naughton. “The exposure they get from interacting with these engineers really changes perceptions about the field and can change lives.”

Ossining Union Free School District provides opportunities and encouragement for students of all ages to pursue science, technology, engineering and math from the earliest grades. In elementary school, students are using a program called Scratch that enables young students to program animations, simulations and other projects. In middle school, the district offers an after-school robotics program for students and sponsors Engineering Day, and in the high school students  have the chance to participate in the high school robotics team and the district’s nationally recognized science research program.
