"Wonder" Wins the 2013 OPLbery Medal!

Young OPL patrons choose mock Newbery winners.

The Ossining Public Library’s OPLbery Club awarded the third annual OPLbery Medal to Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. OPLbery Honors were awarded to The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate, and Bliss, by Kathryn Littlewood.

The members of this “mock” Newbery Club met monthly to discuss books published during the current year. They began meeting in March of 2012, and overall the members have read more than 40 different books. Over the last few months, they have narrowed the list down to three short lists, finally voting on January 9 for the medal and honors books.

Club members had a lot of opinions about the winning books. Wonder is “very remarkable,” said Elliot. Giancarlo thought that “the message is very moving,” and the book had “a really great blend of different feelings.” Melissa thought that The One and Only Ivan was “a good story of friendship and cooperation.” Eric said Bliss is “an awesome book.” Brandon thought Bliss was “extraordinary.”

The 2013-2014 OPLbery Club will begin meeting in April. For more information, contact the OPL Children’s Room, or check out their blog, OPLbery Club: YOU Be the Judge (http://oplberyclub.wordpress.com/).
