Mendia’s parents dead in a Montrose pond after a 35-hour search Monday morning. Police believe Mendia accidently stumbled into the heavily vegetated pond in the dark and got stuck.

Santi used to come to our deli every day (D & M deli+pizza) Its sad enough to watch as these children grow into mature adults each year...but to see that one has left us as such an early age is so heartbreaking. Santi was always very kind, very considerate, and always had a smile on his face. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.

I met Santiago Mendia while building out on his father's new restaurant at 825 Washington Street in Peekskill. He came from a close loving extended Peekskill family. His father, Wilson runs Mendia Wood Flooring, a local contracting firm. His uncle owns El Conquistador restaurant on Bank Street. He had a sense of humor that brought a smile to the people around him. He was a son, a brother, a cousin, a nephew, a friend. You will be missed. ..... Thomas M. Leigh, Architect
