Health Coaching? Why?
Ever wondered what a Health Coach does? Here is the answer!
In October of 2009 CBS News reported that "Chronic diseases such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes wreck our quality of life and cost a fortune. In recent years, a new and intriguing concept has emerged in the prevention and treatment of chronic illness: the health coach."
Health coaching is a relatively new profession that is beginning to gain recognition in the traditional medical field. As the face of healthcare changes, doctors and patients alike are starting to turn to trained Health Coaches to help implement nutritional and lifestyle changes in an affordable way.
Joshua Rosenthal, head of The Institute for Integrative Nutrition defines a Health Coach like this:
"A Health Coach is a wellness authority and supportive mentor who motivates individuals to cultivate positive health choices. Health Coaches educate and support clients to achieve their health goals through lifestyle and behavior adjustments. Health Coaches know how to work with diverse groups of people and equips them with the tools necessary to best fit the needs of their clients.
As more and more awareness is given to preventative care, health coaching is seen as a vital aspect of creating healthy lifestyle changes. Health Coaches are becoming recognized as essential and integral parts of people's health and well-being. Not only are doctors hiring more Health Coaches than ever before, but patients are learning that working with a Health Coach is one of the most effective ways to improve their health as more and more medical professionals recognize the vital importance of Health Coaches."
