Secrets of Ossining: Maryknoll

Many people who live in Croton and Ossining have never visited Maryknoll. Patch got an insider's look at the Catholic missionary society.

This year Maryknoll is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The Catholic missionary society continues to combat poverty, build communities and advance social justice across the world.

Many people are unaware that Maryknoll offers tours of their center. The center's exterior displays an Asian influence. The motif reflects Maryknoll's decades of mission work in China.

Patch wants to know if you have ever visited Maryknoll? If so, please tell us about your experience in our comments section. We would love to hear from you.

I've visited Maryknoll many times, for many reasons. The view of the Hudson from their site can be spectacular. I've been to choral concerts in their lovely chapel, and to some of the events in their interesting lecture series. In their gift shop you can find items handmade in the countries where they have missions, particularly Latin America. I've even used their post office in order to renew my passport. I've taken house guests there, too, since many people around the country are aware of Maryknoll. But many also are aware of the Maryknoll convent across the road and of the nuns who fan out from there to do their good works around the world. They are treasures.

As part of its "Holy Ossining Program" , the Ossining Historical Society has sponsored tours of Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers seminary as well as of the Maryknoll Sisters facility across the road. Each place has beautful paintings, historical photographs unique objects, interesting architecture and peaceful grounds. Get to know these places. They are worthy contributors to the social, spirtual and cultural mix that makes Ossining such a wonderful community.
