Spartans Capture Division 4 Wins

Spartans swim team end the season with record breaking times.

Division 4 Championships at Pocantico

The Pocantico Hills swim team hosted the Division 4 meet of the Northern Westchester Swim Conference (NWSC) on August 4.  Division 4 winners earned the right to swim at the league’s All-Star meet on August 5.  At the All-Star meet, the Division 4 champions vied with champions from the other four divisions in the NWSC for an overall league championship title.  At Pocantico, twenty-eight Spartans swimmers crowded the sunny, hot pool deck, cheered on by their parents and supporters.  Swimmers from the other four teams in Division 4 mustered in different quarters around the pool enclosure.

In an extraordinary show of great swimming, twenty of the 28 Spartan swimmers earned Division 4 titles and qualified to swim in eighteen events at the All-Stars meet.

Stella Meyerhoeffer, Sarah Kamal, Emily Rocco, and Tara Tassio led off with a spectacular finish in the 10 & under 200m medley relay, finishing in 2:40:19, and outstroking the other teams by half a lap.  The 14 & under medley relay team, featuring Alex Carlos, Vladmir Moise, James Cevasco, and Nico San Martin, snapped up gold in their 100m event in 2:31:00.

In individual backstroke events, Spartans swimmers seized division championship titles in six of ten events.  Serafina and Yohance secured division championships in the 8 & under 25m events, with finishes of 22:44 and 22:34, respectively.  Stella Meyerhoeffer (40:69) and Matias Gomez (48:30) seized the 10 and under 50m division title.  Emma San Martin (41:62) and Alex Carrazzone (41:34) swept the 50m event for swimmers 12 & under.

In breaststroke, Sarah and Yousef Kamal won championship medals, with Yousef finishing his 8 & under 25m race in 24:75 and Sarah finishing her 10 & under 50m event in 42:18.  Three Spartans won division titles in butterfly:  Lilly Pawliczak, with a white-hot 18:94 finish in the 8 & under 25m event, Yousef Kamal, who finished the 8 & under 25 m race in 20:44, and Emily Rocco, who flew by others in her 10 & under 50m event to close in 16:75.

In freestyle, the Spartans swept the division title in the 6 & under category.  Yvonne Gomez seized gold in 22:35 and Orien Douglas clinched his division title in 22:38.

Spartans freestyle relay teams took gold in three of six age graded events.  The boys’ 8 & under 100m relay team, manned by Yohance Douglas, Yousef Kamal, Demetrios Gutierrrez, and Ryan Roksvold, won in 1:27:47.  In the 12 & under girls’ 200m event, Sammy Novo, Stella Meyerhoeffer, Emma San Martin, and Emily Rocco sealed the deal in 2:24:09.  Lastly, Nico San Martin, Vladmir Moise, Alexander Carlos, and James Cevasco secured the Division 4 title in the boys’ 18 & under 200m relay in 2:11:56.

All-Star Meet at Briarcliff Manor

Division winners from the 28 teams in the NWSC met August 5 at the Briarcliff Manor Municipal Pool for the All-Star meet hosted by the Briarcliff Manor Swimming and Diving Team.  The twenty qualifying Spartans competed against the other division winners for a league title.

In the 10 & under girls’200yd medley relay, the Spartans broke the four-year old league record by a second to finish in 2:23:51, and improving their time from the championship meet.  Stella Meyerhoeffer led off with backstroke, and handed off to teammate Sarah Kamal for breaststroke.  Sarah handed off a body-length lead to Emily Rocco for fly.  The competition edged up on the Spartans, but then Tara Tassio exploded into the freestyle leg and won the race by two body lengths.  Coach Mike Kane commented that this “…was an outstanding performance.  Spartans girls were the only relay team to break a relay record here today.”

In four individual events, Spartans took home league victories.  Yohance Douglas is 2012 league champion in the boys’ 8 & under 25 yd backstroke.  Yousef Kamal blazed to first in the 8 and under boys 25 yd breast.  Ivonne Gomez powered through her 6 & under girls’ 25 yd freestyle to win first.  Stella Meyerhoeffer won her 10 & under girls’ 50yd backstroke heat handily.

Head Coach Mike Kane, pleased with his team’s performance, commented that this meet was a great finish to a summer of inspired swimming.  “These kids have been watching the Olympics for two weeks, and today they swam in their own Olympics.  This is the second year that we’ve broken league records here, and we’ve only been swimming in this league for two years.”
