3 Minutes on a Park Bench with a Woman Who Helps Local Charities Grow

Joanna Straub was named to head up Nonprofit Westchester right after the advocacy group was launched in 2012.

But it's her hiking prowess that impresses us.

Since Straub's appointment, the number of members of Nonprofit Westchester has grown, and she has lobbied for more support for the charities that provide the county's social services.

Patch recently grabbed a quick Q&A with the Croton-on-Hudson resident.

Patch: What's your morning routine?

Straub: Coffee, then stare off into the distance like a zombie until it kicks in.  Then I get my two small kids dressed, fed, and dropped at the sitter, and run out the door to work.

What do you do for a living? And what's the best thing about your job?

As the Executive Director of Nonprofit Westchester, I am responsible for everything from raising funds and recruiting member organizations to planning events and promoting the nonprofit sector.  I love the variety – there is something new every day!

What's the hardest?

Deciding what not to do.  There are so many great opportunities, but I can’t do everything.

How long have you lived here?

I’ve lived in Westchester since I married my husband in 2000.

What's your favorite thing about living here?

As a San Diego native, I really enjoy the variety in the seasons -  although this last winter has me questioning that!

If you had to arrange a secret meeting here, where would you have it?

The Ossining Weir Chamber of the Old Croton Aqueduct.  Aside from periodic guided tours, it isn’t open to the public.  It is a unique historical treasure that few know about.

Tell us something about yourself that most of your neighbors don't know.

I’ve hiked the Grand Canyon rim to rim three times, as well as to the top of Mt. Whitney (highest point in the Continental U.S.)

When you want a really indulgent snack here, where do you go and what do you get?

The Blue Pig in Croton for their amazing Aztec Hot Chocolate ice cream.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

Wear more color.  As a New York transplant, I think I initially went a little over the top with the all black uniform.  Colors make you stand out and show your confidence.

What are you doing after this interview?

Preparing for NPW’s CEO/Executive Director Affinity Group.  I’m really excited to get so many smart, committed nonprofit leaders together.
