Croton Filipino Starts Fund to Help Typhoon Victims

Lou del Rosario is used to doing good deeds, but not under such dire circumstances.

Del Rosario, the owner of the Elmsford Raceway and a 27-year Croton-on-Hudson resident, is the international director of the Gift of Life organization which helps children around the world get cardiac surgery.

Now, as a Filipino, his efforts are focused on his native country.

The Philippines on Friday were ravaged by a typhoon of epic proportions. The death toll is estimated to reach upwards of 10,000 and relief efforts have been painfully slow with so little infrastructure to move through.

Del Rosario, a member of the Croton-on-Hudson Rotary, knows that sending money is the most effective way to help and he’s urging concerned citizens to donate through this international organization. Donations sent to his local club will go ahead to Rotary clubs in the Philippines.

Del Rosario says he has family in Manila and the affected area in Cebu. His brother is the Hon. Albert del Rosario, secretary of foreign affairs of the country. He's grateful that everyone is accounted for.

“Our cousins live in Cebu and in direct contact with the other affected areas,” he said. “Thank God they are fine.”

Del Rosario himself was actually scheduled to be in the country this month, but the earthquake that hit at the beginning of November stopped him. "We were scheduled to do a Medical Mission to Cebu, just like the we had completed in Manila, the first week of November when the big 7.2 earthquake hit Cebu," he said. "We had to reschedule to February 2014. We would have been there!"
