U.S. Coast Guard: Boat Safety on the Hudson River

At the next Ferry Sloops monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 7:30PM, in the Nature Center at Croton Point Park, Don Elmendorf of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will discuss the New York State Safe Boating Law and the Coast Guard’s restricted zone plans for recreational boaters near the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Admission is FREE and open to the public. Come with a dish at 6:30PM to enjoy a potluck dinner or arrive at 7:30PM for the presentation.

The proposed New York State Safe Boating Law will require all mechanically propelled vessel operators to obtain a boating safety certificate by completing an eight hour safe boating course. This legislation would help eliminate the dangers of boating often attributed to inexperience by requiring boat operators to take a course and become aware of all safety and legal aspects of operating a boat.

The U.S. Coast Guard is considering a restricted zone for recreational boaters near Tappan Zee Bridge. The proposal stems from the increasing number of barges and cranes in the Hudson River connected to the new bridge project.

Ferry Sloops' monthly meetings are held at the Nature Center in Croton Point Park on the first Wednesday of each month. Our potluck supper begins at 6:30PM, followed by our meeting at 7:00PM and guest (speaker or musician) at 7:30PM.
