As the sun peeked above the horizon, hundreds of athletes took to the water of the Hudson River at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson on Sunday morning to begin the Toughman Half Triathlon.
The 1.2-mile swim along a marked course began at 6:30 a.m. and was followed by a 56-mile bike race along the southbound side of Routes 9 and 9A between Briarcliff and Peekskill. The bike path was closed to vehicular traffic during the event.
Finally, a 13.1-mile foot race through the village of Croton-on-Hudson completed the race. County Executive Rob Astorino welcomed the athletes who were assisted by hundreds of volunteers along the entire course.
Residents and spectators watched from their cars and along sidewalks as the competitors raced. Most cheered or shouted words of encouragement while giving the athletes the thumbs-up as they passed.
