Abandoned Bank Finds New Life Thanks To Winery Owner

The Village of Ossining Board Of Trustees approves the owner of The Winery at St. George to bring new life to the iconic Bank for Savings building.

The Ossining Village Board designed Thomas Dechiaro as the preferred developer to bring new life to the long vacant Bank for Savings on the corner of Main Street and Highland Avenue. The Bank has been empty since the 1980’s and is the iconic image, with the clock, at the entrance of Ossining’s Historic Downtown district.

“This is another extremely important project,” said Ossining Mayor William Hanauer. “This is the bank on the corner of main and highland it’s been empty since the 80’s and it’s iconic…The developer has an idea to bring this property back to life.”

The developer, Thomas Dechiaro is the owner of The Winery at St. George  and is a republican candidate for Yorktown Councilman. The Winery at St. George is housed in the old St. George’s Church on Route 6 in Mohegan Lake; the wines served are made from grapes grown at the Hilltop Farm in Yorktown Heights.

The bank started in 1854 as the Sing Sing Savings Bank but was moved in 1896 to its current location and redesigned in 1908 to the Beaux-Arts style seen today.  If you think you have seen this architectural style before you are correct, it is the same design used in the New York Public Library, Grand Central Station and The Ossining National Bank.

There was no comment from Dechiaro on this topic.
