"Sweet Honey in The Rock" to Sing at Tarrytown Music Hall on Nov. 8

Sweet Honey in the Rock, an all-female, African American singing ensemble, will appear at the 843-seat Tarrytown Music Hall on Friday, November 8, 2013. Its repertoire will include spirituals, blues, folk, gospel, jazz and popular music.

Although Sweet Honey in the Rock has been performing for 40 years, 15 to 20 of the songs in the coming show will be new or rearranged said Carol Maillard, one of the singers that compose the group. Many of the songs to be performed address cultural and humanitarian issues such as social and economical injustice, freedom and racism.

The members of the ensemble have changed over the years but Maillard is a a remaining performer from the original group organized by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon as a quartet in 1973 at the Black Repertory Theater Company in Washington, D.C. Dr. Reagon retired from the group nine years ago.

The idea to form Sweet Honey in the Rock resulted from Dr. Reagon's exposure to discriminatory practices as a young black woman.

She had been jailed in 1961 for participating in a civil rights march in her Albany, Georgia, hometown. After her release, she joined the original Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee Freedom Singers and became a leader in the civil rights movement during the 1960s. She travelled the country, singing about racial issues and conveying the message "We shall not be moved."

The members of the group are Carol Maillard, Aisha Kahlil, Louise Robinson (another original member), Nitanju Bolade Casel and Shirley Childress (sign language interpreter). Special guest artist Navasha Daya will join the group for this performance. Brooklyn-born Parker McAllister will be on electric bass.
