Eyes of the Storm Features Reactions and Reflections by CET Artists a Year After Sandy

After Hurricane Sandy swept through our area, K-4 students came back to the Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School (CET) with different experiences and stories to share with their peers and teachers. It was an event that effected many lives, both during and after the storm. Students saw trees blown over or tree limbs scattered throughout the town. Some students remained without power at their home for many days after the storm.

After attending an art educators conference last year, CET art teacher Brienne Johannes was inspired to develop a project for her children to share their reflections in a creative manner, not only depicting hardship and tragedy, but how Croton came together as a community and how residents assisted their fellow neighbors. CET alone hosted five different donation drives.

The artwork of these former second-graders (now in third) is now on display through two exhibits, both entitled "One Year After Hurricane Sandy: The Eyes of the Storm–Reactions and Reflections by CET Second Grade Artists." These exhibits are running through Nov. 1 at The Black Cow Coffeehouse (4 Old Post Road S., Croton-on-Hudson) as well as at the Croton-Harmon School District Office (10 Gerstein St., Croton-on-Hudson, NY).
