Susannah the “Jewish Goddess Perleman” is bringing her popular “Jewish Girls Gone Bad “ comedy, music and burlesque variety show to the at 8 p.m. Thursday.
“It has something for everyone,” Perelman said. The show’s performers include women you have seen on Comedy Central, HBO and Late Night TV. One of the sponsors is the famous Shmaltz Brewing Company and their infamous line of HE'BREW craft beers.
The Nice Jewish Girls Done Bad website describes the show as:
“These badass chosen chicks boldly dare to deconstruct years of tradition, expectations and guilt in a fast-paced vaudeville extravaganza, complete with kick lines, punch lines and a rendition of "L'chaim" with a fist in the mouth. This ain't yo' mama's "Fiddler.”
Perelman created the show ten years ago after she had seen many different female acts that she admired.
“I was doing a lot of comedy and music and I sort of kept running into women who had an act that spoke to me profoundly, whether it was comedy, burlesque or music. I wanted to see how it can operate in a show together,” Perelman said.
The show features about five or six women chosen from a group of about 40 performers. The core group changes depending on who is available for the show and where it will be held. The women always have fun with their acts, which include elaborate costumes, elements that are very “vintagey,” with Yiddish and Hebrew songs, but also a “kind of hip, fun, irreverent comedy element to it,” Perleman said.
Perelman is a colleague of local activist and head of the Westside Neighborhood Association Tina Bongar and is excited to help the WNA, which is struggling to cover itsand to perform at Birdsall’s outside courtyard.
"It is a fundraiser for the Westside Neighborhood Association, so the Eastside Neighborhood Association should be jealous," Perleman joked.
“I think people really like it. It’s a colorful, fun show. And you don’t have to be Jewish to like it,” Perleman said. Religious folk will enjoy it to, she says. “When people who are religious Jews come, they are pleasantly surprised by the show.”
“Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad” starts at 8 p.m. Thursday at The Birdsall House, and will run a little over one hour. The Goddess Perleman advises people to show up early to enjoy some of Shmaltz Brewing Company’s infamous line of HE'BREW craft beers. Tickets are $20 advance and $25 at the door.
