I remember when this guy with an unusual name came up with the Yankees. "What the heck is a Mattingly?" I wondered. "Sounds like an adverb more than a major league player." Well, we now know who Don Mattingly was and is -- arguably the most beloved living retired Yankee after Yogi Berra.

When another player with another unusual -- but made-for-stardom -- moniker arrived on the scene, it was with a lot of media hype. And Derek Jeter now is on the verge of having more career hits than the one and only Cal Ripken, Jr.

Derek Jeter indeed surpassed Cal Ripken, Jr. on the all-time hits list, and Adam Warren's major league debut was destined to become de butt of jokes as the Bombers bombed big-time, getting socked by the ChiSox 14-7.
