Costco: Hit or Myth?
Nobody agrees more than Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace that his town's forthcoming Costco is not a "tax base" solution. It's a "smart growth" solution.
None of the earnest arguments I've heard expressing reservations about -- or outright opposition to -- the anticipated 2013 arrival of Costco in Yorktown rest on a rock-solid foundation.
There's the "BJ's" argument: "We already have one of those big-box thingamajigs." Right. BJ's is as good an argument for Costco as any. Did you ever see a Burger King where there wasn't a McDonald's nearby? Did you ever see a thriving local economy where there is one of each class of retail trade? Have you heard how Costco is a retail experience like no other in the most positive sense?
There's the "Open Space" argument, for which I refer to a recent entry in this blog, titled "Open Space Cadets," elsewhere on this site.
