Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester), Assemblywoman Sandy Galef (D-Westchester/Putnam), and other state and local officials today joined forces to urge the Governor to sign their legislation that will fundamentally change the way boating safety is implemented in New York State.  With summer finally here, the two state legislators were able to pass their bill through both chambers of the state legislature last week.  The effort is designed to educate individuals who currently do not possess boating knowledge to help prevent tragedies from unfolding, as was the case last summer in Long Island and along the Hudson River.

Their bill (A.3471-A/S.1639-A) requires all mechanically propelled vessel operators to obtain a boating safety certificate by completing an eight hour safe boating course.  The requirement would be implemented through a multiyear phase-in beginning in 2014 with 18 year olds.  This legislation would help eliminate the dangers of boating often attributed to inexperience by requiring boat operators to take a course and become aware of all safety and legal aspects of operating a boat.

From Ossining-Croton Patch: Ossining Schools Award Food Contract

Fresh fruit, dark leafy greens, sushi once a week – this is not your father’s school lunch. It is part of a new food service program for Ossining schools, which will provide more diverse food offerings, a farm-to-fork initiative and higher quality foods.

Ossining Union Free School District received three bids from food service management companies to operate cafeterias in the district’s six schools. The bids were opened on June 5 and after a thorough review of each proposal, the Aramark Education proposal was determined to be the lowest responsible bidder. The Board of Education subsequently approved the bid award to Aramark at its June 12th meeting.

From Tarrytown- Sleepy Hollow Patch: RiverMarket, a Crabtree's Kittle House Sister Restaurant, Expects to Open in Tarrytown on July 8

RiverMarket Bar & Kitchen, a new sister restaurant to Crabtree's Kittle House Restaurant & Inn in Chappaqua, NY, will open in Tarrytown, NY, on Monday, July 8, 2013 (tentative date).

The restaurant has 125 inside seats plus additional seating on a patio, weather permitting. It has a large bar, a pizza oven, and occupies a separate building on West Main Street in the Hudson Harbor complex, not far from the Tarrytown Metro-North train station. Also coming to the same location will be a gourmet market and a wine shop called RiverMarket Wines & Spirits.

Chef John Holzwarth, 41, head of the kitchen staff, is exchanging one river view for another. He was the chef at The Boathouse in Westport, CT, where the Saugatuck River is visible from the dining room window. Now, he can see the Hudson.

From Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow Patch: Summertime, Ice Cream and Paint Chips

Peeling and chipped paint above ready-to-eat food is a potential physical hazard.  In this case if the ice cream pictured here is contaminated and ingested by a child, there may be a possibility of illness.  Just when you thought you were doing your kid a favor by taking them out for a cool treat on a hot summer day.

Ice cream as innocent as it seems, can cause foodborne illness if it is mishandled, improperly stored, thermally abused (thawed and re-frozen) or made with contaminated ingredients.
