Jazz Forum Arts (JFA), the top presenter of jazz artists in Westchester County, is holding its First Annual Vocal Jazz Competition this May.
The event is set for Saturday, May 5, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at Nepperhan Community Center in Yonkers.
The JFA will be working to identify budding jazz talent in Westchester County and give them an opportunity to showcase their artistry during JFA’s 2012 Summer Concert Series.
The JFA’s First Annual Vocal Jazz Competition will embrace its mission of “presenting top-quality events to the public at little to no cost, while enhancing the appreciation of Jazz, America’s pre-eminent indigenous art form.”
“JFA and its Board are truly excited to be launching this first-ever vocal jazz competition for Westchester County,” said Mark Morganelli, Founder and Executive Director for JFA. “We know that there are some great jazz artists in Westchester County. JFA wants to find them as well as present them with their own show this summer during our County-wide concert series.”
JFA’s 1st Annual Vocal Jazz Competition will be auditioning jazz vocalists, from soloists and duos to a cappella groups. Auditioning jazz artists will be judged on how well they sing in the jazz style (i.e. phrasing, musicality, scatting, performance and tone).
The 2012 judges for JFA’s First Annual Vocal Jazz Competition are Grammy nominated jazz vocalist, Maya Azucena; award-winning Canadian jazz vocalist, Melissa Stylianou; well-known jazz drummer, Tony Jefferson; JFA Board Member and accomplished jazz vocalist, Tyrha M. Lindsey; Jazz vocalist and Jazz Forum Arts judge Tyrha M. Lindsey; and JFA Board Chair, John Gunther-Mohr.
All interested vocalists who want to participate in JFA’s 1st Annual Vocal Jazz Competition must download an audition form at www.jazzforumarts.org and bring it with them to the audition on May 5.
