All tour proceeds benefit the Croton Arboretum and Sanctuary, Inc. a volunteer-run, non-profit organization that provides environmental stewardship for more than 20 acres of wetlands and woods at the Jane E. Lytle Arboretum in Croton-on-Hudson.

The sites on the self-guided garden tour are as follows (information provided by the Croton Arboretum and Sanctuary):

  • A private preserve with a vegetable garden, orchard, perennial beds, lawn and woods that has been maintained without the use of pesticides by a New York Botanical Garden instructor.
  • An 1840s farmhouse surrounded by perennial beds and large old maple trees.
  • A quarter-acre plot that’s been transformed into a self-sufficient farm.
  • A  small garden on a terraced hillside set in an urban neighborhood.
  • A working farm that has been in the same family for a hundred years, managed by a descendant who boards horses, raises bees and grows heritage crops.
  • A 23-acre historic estate, originally part of the much larger homestead of a family that settled in Cortlandt in 1735.
