Police: Bear Sighting on Croton Golf Course

An Arrowcrest Drive resident reported seeing a bear on the Hudson National Golf Course in his backyard on the morning of July 11.

He told police it took him 30 minutes to call Croton police because he wasn't sure who to call at first. Police searched the area but didn't find any trace of a bear.

Sgt. John Nikitopoulos said citizens should indeed call local police if they see a bear so police can ensure there’s no safety hazard.

At least one black bear was spotted in Briarcliff Manor and Ossining on June 30, according to both police departments.

Police said they went to both area to search for the bear, but weren't able to find any trace of it.

The Village of Ossining issued the following alert to residents and shop keepers: “Please secure your garbage, pets and bird feeders at night."

A black bear was then spotted further north on July 9 in Peekskill.

"Peekskill police are in the process of coaxing a nuisance black bear off city streets and into the woods by Depew Park and Blue Mountain," Bob Knight, a spokesperson for the city, said at the time. "Residents are asked to keep their garbage covered and pet food inside. If you see a bear, do not approach it and do not surround it."

Sgt. Nikitopoulos couldn't connect these sightings to the same bear, but “it’s probably a very similar one,” he said.
