Ossining, Croton & Fracking

What do Croton-on-Hudson and Ossining residents think about the CDC's new take on fracking?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says a lot more research needs to be done on fracking. Director of the CDC's National Center for Environmental Health Christopher Portier says he is concerned about the potential negative consequences on human health and the environment, when it comes to possible shale gas drilling. The news comes as Duke University researcher Rob Jackson says it could take up to five years for analysts to get their arms around the effects of fracking.

Meanwhile, many are wondering how long it will take Governor Cuomo to make a decision about fracking. During his State of the State address the governor changed course from his prepared text regarding fracking, instead of saying that his administration would make a decision in 2012.

Those who are against fracking say it could contaminate the air and drinking water. Those in favor of the practice say it would create thousands of jobs in economically depressed areas.

State Senator Greg Ball has called on Cuomo to take a harder line on gas companies that want to drill here. But not everyone in our areas is against fracking. In a recent article on Ossining-Croton Patch, one reader said, "The fact is we need more resources. Many of us don't have the means to afford any more increases on the cost of energy. I say frack and drill... the more oil and gas the lower the price will be." Another reader responded by saying, "What about the unexpected spills of these fracking plants, which is inevitable? Are we even prepared to handle a potential catastrophic event? The guidelines are limited and at best, sketchy. Is Fracking really worth the risks involved here?"
