United Way of Northern Westchester Announces 2013 Local Grant Recipients

July 2013 – United Way of Northern Westchester is pleased to announce the 2012-2013 Local Presence Program grant recipients. Over $5,000 in grants was awarded following the recommendations of United Way Local Presence Committee Members Marcel Hegglin (Chair), Nancy Gould and Susan Tansey.

These modest grants awarded by United Way’s Local Presence Program help fund local community-based human and health service organizations that do not currently receive United Way funding. Organizations that receive funding share with United Way the fundamental belief that education, income, and health are essential for a better life.

Founded in 2009, the Charles L. Brieant Community Center provides services beneficial to youth in the greater Ossining area and for at-risk youth in Westchester County through partnerships with the Greater Ossining School District. This year’s local presence grant will support their new “Peer Mediation Program” at Ossining High School during the 2013-2014 school year, which teaches students how to resolve conflicts among their peers without turning to violence.

SPARC, Inc., Special Program and Resource Connection, founded in 1989, enhances the lives of people with developmental disabilities through high quality therapeutic recreation activities. United Way’s support will enhance staffing levels for “,” a distinctive recreation therapy program, held at PACE University in Pleasantville, for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), aged 4-12. For 67 years, the Mental Health Association of Westchester has provided behavioral health services to the community to help each person achieve their personal goals and lead independent and healthy lives. Their Mount Kisco Clinic provides core services and assisted almost 550 individuals in 2012. This year’s grant will allow the clinic to purchase new toys, games and art supplies used with adults and children during therapy, as well as provide healthy refreshments for adult therapy groups that meet three times per month.

Westchester Exceptional Children's School is a special education day facility located in North Salem, serving individuals with autism and multiple handicaps as well as children who are medically fragile. This year’s United Way grant will support domestic/home living skills instruction for individuals with disabilities such as daily living skills (common daily chores and functions), personal abilities, and occupational skills. These skills are essential for graduates’ successful placement in an integrated community living environment and a more independent lifestyle.
