The Italian movie The Gospel According to St. Matthew released in 1964 by director Pier Paolo Pasolini will be featured at the Maryknoll International Film Festival, Friday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. The film will be shown at the Maryknoll Mission Center at 55 Ryder Road in Ossining. All are invited and admission is free.
The film is a retelling of the story of Jesus Christ from the Nativity through the Resurrection. The dialogue primarily is taken directly from the Gospel of Matthew. Pasolini felt that "images could never reach the poetic heights of the text." He reportedly chose Matthew's Gospel over the others, because he had decided that "John was too mystical, Mark too vulgar, and Luke too sentimental."
